The 1950s sold a very specific picture of women: neat, smiling, agreeable. Retro Rebel 50s Girl borrows the look of that era and throws away the script. She didn’t wait for permission and she wasn’t planning to start.
Lazarus works with the visual vocabulary of mid-century advertising and pin-up illustration — the confident poses, the graphic clarity, the polished colour — and then lets attitude break through. The result is a portrait that feels both nostalgic and defiant: the kind of woman history tried to edit out and art keeps bringing back.
It pairs naturally with the rest of Lazarus’s retro series, especially Consume 50s Waitress, which turns the same decade’s imagery towards consumer culture. Hung together or alone, it suits vintage-styled interiors, record rooms, salons and any wall that could use a bit of rule-breaking.
Rules were made for people who didn’t have better ideas.
